4.75 stars!!This was such a lovely book. I just adored the hero, John, and the heroine, Eliza. John had the biggest heart; he was SO good and loving towards Eliza. Eliza was such a fighter, a survivor. Her background story was heartbreaking and she was so deserving of an HEA. I liked how all the pieces if the story came together and were resolved in the end. It was very satisfying. The only reason I took off the .25 star was because the writing was very simple at times.
Re: Eliza's past: *********SPOILER BELOW *******
She was basically sold into prostitution at age 14 and lived that life for many years until a preacher helped her find a way out of it. In the first half of the book, when she talked about it, I had some difficulty in thinking about how so many men had touched her etc. But by the second half, I wasn't thinking about that anymore. What is interesting is that I read another book recently where the heroine was a prostitute and it really impacted my enjoyment. What made a difference here is that John felt compassion and acceptance of her. In the other book I read, the hero had major issues with his h's past -- and he couldn't handle it.

When I started this book it took me just a few pages to totally fall in love with John and Eliza and I absolutely could not put the book down. I loved that Eliza treated John like he was "normal" and did not think he was a "retard" because he couldn't speak. It absolutely did not matter to Eliza that John couldn't speak. She loved to talk and she talked enough for both of them! I thought it was cute that Eliza would say something to John and then she would answer the question that she thought he wanted to ask. I loved how determined John was that Eliza would marry him and he would NOT marry the mail order bride he sent for but for some reason did not show up.
I loved how quickly Eliza set the store owner straight when he was trying to cheat John because John did not know how to read and write and didn't know his numbers. John had never been allowed to go to school because people assumed that because he was mute he was also not smart enough to learn anything. As a result, he had been unable to communicate with anyone other than through facial expressions and gestures. One of his own brothers said that there was no reason to talk to John because he couldn't understand anything and "unlike a dog" he could not even be trained. Instead of thinking John was dumb because he was illiterate, Eliza told him that she would teach him to read and write and she immediately set out to do just that. She also taught him his numbers so unscrupulous merchants could no longer cheat him.
Eliza was a woman who had been orphaned at the age of 14 and then was mistreated by her uncle when she went to live with him and later was forced into a life of prostitution. I enjoyed seeing how, against seemingly insurmountable odds, she left that life behind and made a new life for herself. She felt that God had forgiven her but forgiving herself was a bit more difficult! John loved her even when he learned of her previous occupation.
I loved the story and I didn't care if there were things in the story that were anachronistic. It is a fiction book, not a treatise on life in the early 19th century. Unfortunately, there were those who got so distracted by anachronisms or an occasional misspelled word that they totally missed the beautiful love story that was told. How sad!
Absolutely, hands down, worst written book I have ever read. It's not the concept, or content per se. It is the triteness, the short sentences. The shrugging. Enough with the shrugging !! Also when you are trying to prove the H is just mute but not dumb, stop describing him as 'lumbering'. The hh is simply unlikeable. The "villain" never does anything to appear creepy, yet hh is always running away from him. She slaps an old lady, considers sleeping with a nice man for money, even though we are supposed to believe she has found God and is reformed. Sloppy, amateurish, dumb book. Save your time, save your money !
I found this book to be very emotional, degrading and very awesomely beautiful. A young woman Eliza who lost her parents at the tender age of 14 ended up with her aunt and was raped by her uncle, to frighten to tail her aunt do to her uncle's threats and when it's found out, he's told to get rid of her. He sells her to a whore house and after she has the baby, he is adopted out HER body is not hers anymore until 13 years later when she meets preacher Peters. John is a mute who his brother sends off for a mail order bride for him. When the stagecoach arrives one bride arrives but the other doesn't and John assumes that Eliza is his and he's consumed by her. Eliza finds out that Ms. Peters that she's to meet and have employ is dead and John still wants to marry her so he gives her employment at his house in hopes that she will marry him. Both have very emotional baggage.... CAN they get through it and make it work and find God's love? Find out in this extraordinary book that brings to people together.
I would definitely recommend this book. I loved the characters and how they were portrayed. There's a bit of explicit sex involved, nothing crude or luxe, but enough in my opinion for an adult only due to the content.
Happy reading!
This was a sweet romantic book. The hero, John, is one of five brothers. He is deaf, cannot read or write. He has sent away for a mail order bride. Eliza has left behind her life as a prostitute and is looking to start anew. She comes to town to be a housekeeper for a woman that has recently passed away. John offers to marry her and she refuses. Instead, he offers her the position of house keeper at his home. She accepts. What follows is a story about forgiveness, persistence, and true love. Both Eliza and John work hard to overcome their obstacles. They are able to reach their happily ever after. This can be read as a stand alone novel however, you will most like want to see what happens to these two. This is the first in a series of three. I have read books one and two. This book is clean and exciting read. There is some adventure. I found myself cheering these two on, even when it looked bad.
