Take a Piece of My Heart Wavering Hearts Series Diane Rose Duffy 9781501002670 Books
I found “Take a Piece of My Heart” by Diane Rose Duffy to be an almost true story of what happens to a young girl like Kara, who’s too young to really understand the true meaning of love. Kara, against her parent’s wishes decides to run off with a guy her parents had forbidden her to see and gets married to him; which only could have happened because of her youthful innocence. Before long she discovers the truth of what the adorable man she’d married is truly like, and the happy ever after she once thought she’d get is now merely a nightmare no woman wants to be in.
Not only did the cad she married take a piece of her heart; he took quite a lot more from her. I believe her husband had taken almost everything from her, everything that is except for her will to survive and her determination to find solace somewhere far away from him.
This is a story any woman who’s in an abusive relationship and has been able to escape from can relate to. Once Kara leaves her husband she gets on a roller coaster ride of emotions just like any another woman who has lived through the same ordeal.
While I usually find 50+ chapters a bit excessive for a novel of this length; however, Ms. Duffy skillful use this number of chapters on her first outing as an author, makes it read like a diary of Kara’s existence with her husband, from when they first met, through her horrific life with him, her escape, to the journey in which she finds the happy ever after she has search so long for.
It’s too bad I can only give this book 5 STARS, as it deserves more.

Take a Piece of My Heart Wavering Hearts Series Diane Rose Duffy 9781501002670 Books Reviews
I read this so fast, I could have kept on going, that's how much I LOVED this book! Not knowing how Diane wrote, since this is her debut novel, I didn't expect to be hooked so fast! She surely has a way with storytelling. I laughed my butt off so much, I don't remember the last time someone could make me do that. What a refreshing feeling that was.
This story is witty, snarky, sarcastic, downright hilarious that you can't help but want more from Diane. She created such an outstanding character in Kara. I loved her from the first page of the book. She had such rough start in life, leading to a horrible first marriage that deals with physical and mental abuse. What makes me love Kara, she never gave up hope, and became this strong woman who decided to change her life to find a better one. That she did.
I seriously cannot wait to to read what's ahead in Diane Duffy's future books. She's an amazing author.
Take A Piece of My Heart by Diane Rose Duffy is an amazing read. I enjoyed it immensely. Though, I must admit I didn't get into it right away. The characters are easy to identify with and are believable. I thought Kara was a sweet girl but she was rather naive at times. I don't understand why she felt obligated to stay with Danny, her abusive husband, for so long. It was great to watch her get the courage to leave and find true love for herself. I liked most of the characters in the book, both the main characters and secondary ones. I really liked DJ he was an honorable man that wanted what was best for Kara. His priority would always be his daughter but he also had room for her in his heart. Take A Piece of My Heart is an emotional journey that is filled with drama, heartache, strength, courage, love and redemption. There is so much more to the story other than a sappy romance with an HEA. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance reads.
The author gives a story that could be from any one of our families or friends with serious issues. Abuse is never easy for those that have to live it. I would have to say the author hit the action and reaction of the characters dead on. She gives a wonderful plot and some great characters I doubt you could read or listen to this and not have a major reaction one way or another. There is a lot going on and is pretty much a fast pace listen. The author gives a great story on overcoming obstacles as the main character finds her place in life. This is a very complicated read from the men that come in her life, I would have to say Kara life could have been so much worse and taken a different road if she didn’t have the support of one major outstanding friend. Getting out of her abusive relationship was a lot easy for her than it is for most in the real world. Not saying this takes away from the story at all just stating a fact. I was glad to see her get out and not have to hard of a time starting over.
First let me talk about what I liked about this story. It is a story that most of us can relate to, Danny has control issues. He cuts her off from everyone which is normal for this type of relationship. It is normal for most abused people to stay in that relationship for many years with many never getting out. I found this to be believable and dead on. Rebound relationships are normal as well when you are in an abuse relationship you usually fall for the first man who treats you with respect. For me this made the story more real and one I could relate to. The author does give you some very serious issues which I thought she handled with a pretty good style. The characters are likable even Danny turned out to be ok, I still didn’t care for him and he still needs some major work but he is a topical man promising or doing things to change your mind to get you back. In most cases it would never have lasted I like that Kara saw that. Forgiveness is hard when you are in this type of relationship I was proud of Kara for giving hers but standing her ground. Mitch was a sweetheart that I did adore and I understood him. I was a little pushed on feeling sorry for him with him being gone so long and never being upfront to what he truly wanted but he was still a wonderful man that gives so much to this story. DJ in my book was the best character of all his character (except for his daughter) was the most grown up of them all. He always put others first even when he might not have wanted to. Kara was a funny lady at times and I could relate to her. My heart went out to her many times as she works her way through each event the best way she knew how. This is pretty much a clean read there is passion and there is sex but it isn’t thrown in your face. I like this change from time to time. I adored DJ’s daughter and loved the things that came out for mouth. For me she made this story a fun and loving read. I loved the humor popping up when you didn’t expect it I even adored the best friend and how she pushed Kara. I really liked Mitch’s sister and her way of stirring up things. The funniest parts for me was when Mitch and Kara went to bed the first time now that was funny along with DJ’s daughter being a normal child saying or asking what she wanted to know.
Things I didn’t like were you never got to really know each character since the story is only from Kara point of view. It feels more like memoires with Kara more or less telling a friend or person the story of her life. The author never let the other person talk or not that much you never got their thoughts or feelings. Kara really had no class along with a pout mouth but then I guess most of us do if we think things in our minds that never come out of our mouths. For me this is how the book came across and this was more like Kara was reliving her life in her thoughts not really a story. There were things she said that I just do not see women saying. This next part is just ME and what I like or do not like in no way does it reflect on the author. I do not like title chapters for me that just takes away from the read. I felt there was something that could have been left out that would have made this a much better read. Some parts the author tried to be funny but for me it didn’t come across that way when at other times I really laughed. What it boils down for me is this was so one side that you never really got to know some wonderful characters.
Jennifer Bossio I thought did a pretty good job of narration. She did put emotion in the read at times I thought it was a little off but all in all she did not do a bad job. Towards the end she did put some character voices in but for me that throw me off since it was not done throughout the whole story. She did make the book more interesting for me and in my book much better than if I would have read it. When Kara was mad you knew it, if she was sad well you knew that as well, lord when she got excited the narrator hit those tones well. I would listen to more audios this narrator has worked on, I feel most of what I didn’t care for was not due to the narrator but more of the style the author gave in it being more one sided view and more of Kara thoughts than a normal story would have been.
The audio its self there were times you could tell the narrator had stopped and came back. The pitch of her voice was either higher or lower than it was before. At times I am not sure if it was background noise or it was an echo that I heard. It really didn’t made a big difference just one you will notice if you listen more to the audio than the story being told.
I am really torn on this book it has a lot of great scenes even places where I either laughed out loud or chuckled. It was one that for the most part I enjoyed it isn’t one I would want to listen to again for the reasons given above I am giving this a 3.5 star. I feel this author has great Potential and gives a good plot. She is an author I will be checking back with to watch her development and grow as an author.
