I almost put this book down after the first few chapters. I found the character of Anna to be unbearable at first (I know she's supposed to be this way, but I found it difficult to read about her) She has absolutely no conscience or feelings. She lies and steals. She only cares about herself and as her brother Rowan says, "It's as if she's not human."
But I read on, regardless of not liking Anna. Thank goodness I did, because this book would become an absolute page turner! I must admit that I like to "cheat" and peek ahead to see how the book ends. Even with doing this, I still found the end to be an absolute surprise, as the plot is so full of wonderful twists and turns. After reading the final chapter, the postlude, I was aghast at how the story turned out. All I can say is wow!
It turns out Rowan was correct. Anna isn't quite human at all. Living in a futuristic society (the 1990s!), Anna and Rowan cannot leave their home without consulting with a computer that allows them to go ahead. One day, in an act of rebellion, Rowan goes to a department store without consulting with the computer. He sees Anna there, but when confronted by Rowan, this girl does not know Rowan. Is it possible that Anna has a twin? What is going on?
As a librarian trainee, I am looking forward to booktalking this book and I sure hope that other people check it out. It's well worth it!
This was one of those TV movies that, when you turned on the television and stumbled on it, you were always 30 minutes into the film, so you were slightly lost and unsure how everyone got to the places they were currently in, and this happened quite often. The book saved me from wondering what was always happening in the beginning of the film. Yes, excellent book, sort of slow at first but that's to be said about a lot of books. Anna's character is annoying and obnoxious at most times but soon you start to sympathize with what she has discovered about herself and realize why she is this way. The book is a definite page turner and gives a lot of insight to what our future would hold and what types of secret experiments might have took place shortly after World War 2. The book is targeted at younger audiences but there are plenty of books out there that were meant for younger readers and adults pick them up just as frequently as younger readers. If you have seen the movie the book will definitely peak your curiosity and probably fill in a lot of gaps
This was a book I wanted to read for a long time. I remember seeing the movie many years ago and wanted to read the book then but it took a while to find a copy. For the time it was written, this is a well done book. For modern readers 20+ years later, its lost some of its wonder I think.
This book focuses on Anna, a pre-teen with a very mathematical mind who seems to lack most emotions such as concern, empathy, sorrow, etc. She finds out she is actually a clone when she accidentally comes across another girl who looks exactly the same and has the same name. Anna was part of a science experiment that clones a scientist they had deemed crucial to human-kind. Anna then is places a sort of self-discovery to learn who she is, where she is from and who/what is family.
Its not a bad book but it is dated and is also more geared for the 9-13 year olds.
So for me it was a quick, but enjoyable read. Although I must admit it has some disturbing moments but nothing major. This book has you questioning the morals of scientists though.
Thought provoking sci-fi, easy read. Written in 1980s however story still relates.
I remembered about this movie from when I was little, and I didn't even know it was based on a book....Loved reading the book, totally made me think of how much i enjoyed the movie... great seller and product represenation.....thanks! )
