Mike's a jerk. There is sexy alpha and there is a$$hole alpha and Mike is the a$$hole variety. Kirsten has this problem sometimes with her heroes. My favorite alpha is Tatum Jackson from Sweet Dreams or maybe Ty Walker from Lady Luck. Both had their a$$hole moments but those were early on and they learned from them when their women called them out. Mike doesn't seem to learn. He's rude and doesn't seem to care for anyone not in his immediate social circle. He behavior toward other characters made me think of him as the sort of person who would just drive by me trying to change a flat tire in the rain, whereas Tate or Ty or most of the Nightingale crew would stop and help.
Dusty was okay. She had her points but she didn't come across to me well. This could be because she put up with Mike's nonsense.
And I was bored with the plot so I gave up reading about 60% in and just skimmed the rest, hoping it got better. Not so much.
Currently this book is tied with Breathe (featuring another a$$hole, Chace, who was decent as a side character but sucked as a hero) for worst KA book ever for me.

Games of the Heart The 'Burg Series Book 4 edition by Kristen Ashley Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

Two for the price of one! I don't know if I love Mike or Finley more.

Dusty Holliday left the 'burg years ago. When her brother suddenly passes away, she returns to the farm she grew up on. She may have left angry, misunderstood teen, but she's come back a confident, straight shooting woman. The one thing that hasn't changed in all these years is her love for Mike Haines, her sister's childhood ex boyfriend.

Mike is the quintessential good guy who can't seem to find a good woman who appreciates that. He is a divorced father of two kids, with an ex wife who loves shoes more than her kids. When he sees Dusty at her brother's funeral, Mike jumps to conclusions and goes to confront her. He remembers the girl who left, but gets a big surprise when he meets the woman who's returned. When Mike's wariness of women causes him to jump to more conclusions about Dusty, he realizes too late that he pushed away the best thing that's ever happened to him.

I love these characters. Dusty is strong, confident, independent, resilient, loyal and loves unconditionally. Mike is a great dad, strong, loving, romantic, but a true alpha who is hard headed and fiercely protective. I love that his kids came first. There is something sexy about an amazing dad.

Finley Holliday has just lost his dad, his mom has checked out, his Aunt Debbie is trying to take away the thing that means most to him, the farm he grew up on. He needs his Aunt Dusty to come back to help him. Clarisse Haines, the most beautiful girl in the school, approaches him with a plan to get Dusty back to town so her dad can finally have a woman who truly loves him. Fin is completely on board, because not only can he get his aunt back to help save his farm, but he gets to spend time with Rees.

Clarisse has a big crush on Fin. She watches him from her dad's balcony while he works on his farm. He's the most gorgeous boy in school and way out of her league. When she goes to Fin for help to find love for her dad, she has no clue that she will find love too.

KA gave us her trademark hot steamy alpha romance, with a side of young, sweet innocent love.
Ahhhh…..this is one of the few KA books where I really liked the characters but was a little bored by the entire side story. I mean after a serial killer in For You, a crazy super stalker in At Peace and the child sex trade of Golden Trail a family battle to save the farm fell a little flat.

*ducks for cover from the crazy KA fans*

First let me just say that I LOVE Dusty. She is so great and pretty much is my kind of fly by the seat of her pants kind of girl. I think she might be one of my favorite KA heroines because usually she just decides something and goes with it whatever the consequences. Whether that is hooking up with the guy she had a crush on since she was 12 after a funeral or moving across a few states to help out her family, she decides and just does it.

***“I grabbed my shot of tequila. Then I tossed it back. When I put my empty down to the bar and after I took in a deep breath, I informed her, “I like you. I need a new best friend. I’ve added you to the top of a list that has one name. Yours.”***

I liked the relationship drama that developed between Mike and Dusty. They hit the ground running in this and then Mike being a stupid Alpha KA man that he is screwed it up. Because they have to do that at least once in a book I think it is in KA’s writing contract. But Mike did it spectacularly and he knows it.

***”Yeah, I told you she was The One. Problem is I made it so I wasn’t the one for her. And unfortunately, I live in the ‘burg, she lives in Texas. I got two kids to look after and I don’t have the cake to fly down there and throw myself on my sword….”***

Enter the kids. I usually hate adding kids into my romance novels but really KA usually makes them pretty great so I don’t normally mind and I didn’t here for the most part. Reese (Mike’s Daughter) teams up with Fin (Dusty’s Nephew) to find a way to get Dusty back in town to help her family and thus be available for Mike to win back. It is a great plan and now they have a budding little romance of their own.

Like I said I loved all the Mike/Dusty relationship stuff and I liked the Reese/Fin cute little relationship stuff too but sometimes it seemed to overshadow the main couple. Still overall not bad.

My only issue was with the actual plot of the story. I was a little bored with it. Fin wanted to keep the farm and his mean Aunt Debbie wanted to sell it due to some jealousy issues mostly. It was sad to see how greed and jealously could split a family apart like that after the death of a family member put the board in motion. But I think things like that really happen in some families.

Still there never felt like there was a lot of meat to it and while there are some great speeches and heartfelt moments I never felt like something big was going to happen. But then it did happen and honestly it seemed so random. I know that was the point but still it felt a little cheap *still ducking for cover*

KA hospital scenes always gut me. Even though I’m usually pretty sure that things are going to be okay because 20+ books in there has never been a non-HEA they are still so emotional and stressful. Again this one was done right and really ripped my heart open.

So even though the side plot isn’t quite as good as I hoped, the rest of the story made up for a lot of that. Where is this burg since I feel like it would be a great place to visit for some entertainment you just have to make sure not to get caught in the crossfire.
